Voices from Abroad

Statement of Purpose

Voices from Abroad is a creative writing course designed for immigrant and refugee students with an ESL proficiency of level 5 and higher. In this course, students learn the basic principals of fiction, nonfiction and poetry. They read works by international writers--using them as a catalyst to develop their own writing--and complete short writing exercises. Students learn how to workshop, give peer feedback. Students type and revise their work on the computer.

Curriculum

The class promotes reading, pronunciation, vocabulary, writing, critical thinking, English conversation, computer and typing skills. Students have a safe place to express themselves and explore creative writing as a means of sharing their experiences. Students are taught how to submit works for publication and have the opportunity to present their work at a reading of the final pieces.
